The London Care Record is saving health and care professionals’ time up to a value of £4.6 million each month, helping them to provide safe and effective care more quickly, according to an updated independent economic study (7 July 2025).
Introduced in 2020, the London Care Record is a secure way to share patient information with health and care professionals across the Capital, so they have the information they need at the point of care to inform their clinical decision-making.
In total, the London Care Record has been used over 75 million times and has become a vital tool for health and care staff across the Capital and beyond. This includes supporting safe prescribing of medications, quicker hospital discharges and helping staff spend more time with patients.
Earlier this year, OneLondon commissioned Queen’s University Belfast to undertake an update to their 2023 independent economic evaluation of the London Care Record focusing on reported benefits relating to time-saving. This uses the latest NHS Staff Earnings Estimates and NHS Workforce Statistics as well as current London Care Record usage figures.
The key findings of the updated study include:
- Based on 70.9 million uses of the London Care Record (up to the end of March 2025), the value of time saved is estimated to be up to £135 million.
- As of January 2025, the value of time saved equates to up to £4.6 million per month.
- As of January 2025, the amount of time saved was estimated to be around 109,166 hours each month (6.5 million minutes).
The monthly estimated savings are significantly higher than those from the 2023 report reflecting the extensive work by OneLondon and partner organisations to give more health and care staff access to the London Care Record and to share more patient information through it, making it an even richer tool. The higher estimated savings also reflect the new NHS Staff Earnings Estimates and NHS Workforce.
The case studies in the updated report also demonstrate how, in addition to saving frontline staff time, the London Care Record continues to support them to provide safe, effective and more joined-up care.
Luke Readman, Director of Digital Transformation for NHS England (London), said:
“It is fantastic that the London Care Record is saving health and care professionals’ time of up to a value of £4.6 million a month. Staff also continue to report that the system makes a significant difference in supporting them to provide effective, safe and joined-up care more quickly. Taken together this demonstrates that the London Care Record continues to be an essential and ‘must have’ tool for our frontline staff.
“Harnessing the benefits of digital technology is a key pillar of the Government’s 10 Year Plan for Health in England. Thanks to successful systems such as the London Care Record, we are well placed to drive this important transformation agenda forward across the Capital for the benefit of the communities we serve.”
Dr Ethna McFerran, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Health Economics at Queen’s University Belfast, said:
“Digital Information Technology such as the London Care Record play a critical role in healthcare systems. That’s why I was pleased to update our 2023 economic study of the system. Once again we have taken a very thorough and robust approach using the latest published data sources and identified even higher time saving benefits of the London Care Record. I hope this updated report is a useful reference point for OneLondon and its partners as part of ongoing work on how best to meet the health and care needs of the communities they serve.”
